Description:
Based on the successful planning, design and implementation of the University of Guelph Master Plan, Walter Kehm was invited to participate on the development of the King Abdul Aziz master plan. The proposed men and women’s university was planned to accommodate 15,000 students with a new surrounding community designed for a population of 30,000 people. With the growth of Jeddah, the new university was planned as a singularly unique education institution within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Of primary importance was the development of an academic plan which encouraged the integration of arts and sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Emphasis was placed on the refinement of the academic programs followed by extensive testing of their three-dimensional implications. The final master plan was for a pedestrian oriented campus that encouraged linked buildings, a well-developed hierarchy of courtyard and ceremonial spaces, and integrated underground parking with carefully planned zones. Buildings were designed in accordance with sustainability principles and do not exceed four stories in height. Climatic design analyses provided detailed information on spatial form, orientations, and landscape open-space typologies.

The planned surrounding community was designed to accommodate a diverse population of students, faculty, guest researchers, and Jeddah residents. The plan was designed around the development of public transportation, a variety of public amenities, and diverse housing types and tenures.
